So, how does it sound? It’s amazingly good and stands the comparison to any transistor phono stage I’ve heard. Where it blows away a lot of competition is the meaty, beaty, big and bouncy character it imparts on music; music that gets “audiophiled-to-death” by overly etched, detail-freak ‘stages, some of which cost a ton of money.

The first thing I noticed about The Voice is that, even though it was brand new, it sounded amazingly good from first spin. Most new carts sound both restrained and congested right outta the box. Of course, after about 50 hours, it sounded even better.

Well, count me among the wide-eyed—at least when it came to the Soundsmith system's incredibly clean and fast top-to-bottom transient attack, its spectacular transparency, its taut, deep bottom end, and its airy top. This thing stopped and started faster than any cartridge I've ever heard. The speed and precision of its instrumental attack set new standards for phono cartridges, in my experience, as did its overall transparency and its rhythm'n'pace. In the best sense, it made my Wilson Audio Specialties MAXX 3 speakers sound like electrostatics, but with full bass extension and dynamic capabilities.

The Hyperion, Soundsmith’s new top-of-the-line moving-iron phono cartridge, utilizes a cactus needle cantilever. The sound was not prickly or thorny at all. It was clean, clear, and immediate—bold and well-controlled—with vibrant colors and good senses of rhythm, touch, and scale.

Product(s) Reviewed:

The Voice comes closer than any cartridge I have ever heard at doing both. It is without a doubt the best non-moving coil cartridge I have heard and I would rank it in the top five of any cartridges I have ever heard.

They Said What?

I played this album a few times on my system before adding the Zephyr MK III ES. I found it far superior to the CDs I'd listened to, with excellent tone on Miles' trumpet and a deep and wide soundstage. But when I listened to it the first time with the Zephyr MK III ES, it was another level of cool. Right off the bat, the surface noise was down, significantly. Secondly, the soundstage was deeper and wider than I have ever heard on my system before. James Cobb's snare had more snap and his high hat took on more air. Song after song, I was completely engaged in the music.
