Peter Ledermann (President - Founder) now spends full time at The
Soundsmith teaching, inventing and developing new products under the
Soundsmith name and by commission. He managed the Soundsmith as a
teaching company through the years while engaged in other
occupations. These have included The Audio Experts repair center;
Design/Production Engineer, RAM Audio Systems, Danbury, CT; Director
of Engineering, The Bozak Corp., Norwalk, CT; and Senior Research
Engineer at the T.J. Watson IBM Research Center.
While in the position of owner of The Audio Experts Repair
center, Mr. Ledermann repaired over eight thousand pieces of Hi Fi
equipment, and maintained warranty service for over fifteen major
brands. He also hired and trained many persons to work for the
business, providing high quality service for customers from the
tri-state area.
While at RAM Audio, he was responsible for the production
engineering of high-end power amplifiers, preamplifiers, and a
strain-gauge phono pickup system. He was also responsible for the
hiring and training of the manufacturing work force, as well as
service and laboratory personnel.
While employed as director of engineering at Bozak, Mr. Ledermann
had the pleasure of working with the founder, Rudy Bozak, an early
pioneer in the audio industry. Mr. Ledermann was personally
responsible for invention, design and production engineering of all
new audio products as well as production engineering of the entire
product line. He also re-engineered over 30 of the existing products in Bozak's
extensive speaker and electronic line. New products included eight
models of loudspeakers and drivers, as well as an analog delay
system, a novel satellite/powered mini-subwoofer system based on
"Curva-linear" aluminum drivers and unique crossover designs.
Mr. Ledermann worked at IBM Research for 12 years in both
Physical Sciences and APTL (Advanced Packaging Technology
Laboratories). He has knowledge in the areas of surface science
technology and IC/board packaging development, ultra-high vacuum
systems, high power lasers, automated manufacturing systems, and
novel designs for VLSI packaging. He has received IBM's prestigious
"Outstanding Invention Achievement Award", as well as numerous other
awards, and is the primary and contributing inventor of eleven IBM
patents.
All Soundsmith employees are personally trained by Mr. Ledermann,
and are commissioned with regard to their income. It is to their
advantage to repair equipment properly, as they are personally
responsible should any piece need additional work. The result is one
of the lowest comeback rates in our industry. Over 35 students have
"graduated" from the Soundsmith, and have taken their places in the
work force, many of them staying in the Hi-Fi field.
The primary mission of the Soundsmith is to provide a growing job
base in the electronics repair field in parallel with providing
practical training and skills through a unique work study program.
We strongly believe in the necessity of providing a
mentor-apprentice system wherein those who qualify can be supplied
the missing link between an abstract education and the necessary
skills to become qualified in the field of audio.
The Soundsmith maintains relationships with many superb design and service engineers in the audio field due to Mr. Ledermann's 35 year history in the field.
