“I really do still enjoy playing my hard-to-find vinyl records. As I hadn’t replaced my B&O cartridge in several years, I began researching the best replacement option. Through the web, I found Soundsmith, a B&O authorized cartridge vendor.
My research was particularly timely as I was about to begin a project to digitize a portion of my music collection (i.e., electronic and other forms of alternative music) with the hope of someday putting the music on a digital audio server. In order to get the best quality sound, I contacted Soundsmith about replacing my MMC4 cartridge with an upgraded MMC2.
I was VERY reluctant to spend double or more on the MMC2 ((Please note that we now make an SMMC2 and SMMC1 - Soundsmith)) to replace the MMC4 cartridge (---) I had was pleased with in the past and quite used to. Soundsmith advised me that I would indeed notice a difference, but I was still skeptical thinking they just wanted to upsell the more expensive cartridge.
To make a long story short, I bit the bullet and sprung for the upgrade. Man, what a difference! I am SO glad I did! The soundstage was richer and deeper than ever before; separation was enhanced; and I heard elements of the music that I hadn’t noticed before. The upgrade came at the right time, too, as all of my digitized LPs have been done through the MMC2.
If you are at all considering whether or not to upgrade your B&O cartridge to preserve your LPs, to make better sounding digital transfers, or to just plain hear more beauty in your existing vinyl, I highly recommend that you buy the MMC2. You won’t be disappointed.
